17 in DCCI polls fray

A total of 17 candidates are contesting for directorship of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in the December 14 election.

However, two directors -- one each from Trade Group and Town Group -- have already been elected unopposed. They are Hossain Khaled, former vice-president of DCCI, and Absar Karim Chowdhury, incumbent vice-president.

The voters will elect six more directors -- four from General Group and two from Association Group -- for one-year term.

On Sunday, the last day for withdrawing nomination, 12 candidates- ten from General Group and two from Association Group -- withdrew their nomination.

Now ten candidates are vying for four posts in the General Group. They are Khondoker A Salam, AMH Rahman, Sabur Khan, Shezad A Khan, Bashirullah Bhuiyan, Osman Gani, Shah Alam, Abdul Aziz Sarker, Abdullah Al Rahim and Shahzada A Hamid.

In the Association Group, seven candidates -- Abdus Salam, Manjur Ahmed, Mohammed Bashirullah, Shafiqur Rahman, Delwar Hossain Sarker, Shanewaz Chowdhury and Suraiya Alam -- are competing for two posts.

Manjurur Rahman, chairman of DCCI election board, announced the final list of candidates at the DCCI office on Sunday.

A total of 3,115 voters -- 2,661 from General Group and 454 from Association Group -- will cast their votes to elect six directors.

The DCCI board of directors consists of 24 directors. According to the DCCI constitution, every year one-third of them retires and new directors replace them.

The 24 directors including the newly elected eight will select a president, senior vice-president and vice-president for one-year term.

The election board will announce final result on December 18, two days before the chamber's annual general meeting (AGM) billed for December 20. The incumbent president is expected to hand over the charge to new president at the AGM.
