AI urges PM to probe 'torture' of Nuruzzaman

The Amnesty International (AI) yesterday appealed to the prime minister to probe the alleged torture on a Srimongol businessman at a local police station on November 20.

The AI, in a letter to the Prime Minister's Office and home ministry, asked the PM to ensure businessman Nuruzzaman's safety who is now in police custody at Moulvibazar jail without any formal charge.

Following a complaint filed by the local MP, police arrested Nuruzzaman on November 18, the letter said.

Some civilians, reportedly followers of the local MP, allegedly bashed him at Srimongol Police Station cell at about 10:00pm on November 20. He was admitted to Osmania hospital at 3:00am when his condition became critical, it added.

Although his lawyer obtained a bail for his client, the MP's followers filed five cases against Nuruzzaman to ensure his arrest, the AI alleged.
