Lentil, soyabean oil prices up, onion fall

Prices of some essentials went up slightly early this week, while those of most others declined.Lentil was sold at Tk 52 per kg yesterday in the city's Fakirerpool kitchen market showing a steady rise in prices over the past weeks despite the end of the Ramadan. Soyabean oil was sold at Tk 54 per litre in the same market while prices of bottled oil remained unchanged. Coconut oil prices rose sharply and was sold at Tk 160 per litre compared to Tk 140/45 last week. Prices of mustard oil declined slightly, selling at Tk 65 per litre. Traders at the market alleged some hoarders were stocking soyabean oil and lentil to push prices further up. Onion prices were on the decline and the old local variety sold at Tk 33 per kg while the new local variety sold between Tk 16 and 18. Imported onions were sold between Tk 22 and 24 kg compared to Tk 26 couple of days ago. Prices of most green vegetables were seen declining but still kept on the high side. Cauliflower was sold between Tk 15 and 20 per piece while cabbages were selling between Tk 12 and 15. Sugar, salt and spices saw steady prices. Fresh fruits were still costly and retailers blamed wholesalers and importers for high prices. A dozen of oranges sold between Tk 90 and 100 in the market depending on quality. However, poor quality oranges were sold at Tk 75 to 80 per dozen.
