Unidentified assailants severed tendons of both legs of a teacher of Gopalganj Bangabandhu College at his Bankpara residence at 9:30am yesterday. The victim, Syed Bazlur Rahman, associate professor of physics department, was rushed to Gopalganj General hospital and to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH). He was sent to Dhaka in the afternoon in a critical condition. Students of Gopalganj Bangabandhu College put up barricades on Dhaka-Gopalganj and Gopalganj-Khulna highways and vandalised buses and shops in protest of the attack. Students of other colleges and leaders and activists of Awami League brought out protest rallies. Additional security forces including Bangladesh Rifles have been deployed to avoid any untoward situation. Relatives of the victim said Bazlur's ex-wife Arju Nahar, an officer of Krishi Bank, Motijheel branch, is the mastermind of the attack, while two employees of the college, who are absconding, might have been involved.
