Dy speaker vacates JS rooms

Four days after the prime ministerial intervention, Deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui yesterday vacated the much-talked-about two rooms at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Shahidul Islam, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the energy and mineral resources ministry, took over the rooms again. A Milad Mahfil, arranged by the chairman, was held at the room.

"I am happy to get back the rooms which the speaker allocated me," an all smiles Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star.

The officials at the deputy speaker's office vacated the rooms yesterday morning following an instruction by Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui. The caretaker of parliament secretariat then informed Shahidul Islam, who then reoccupied the two rooms in the afternoon.

The speaker allocated the rooms to the standing committee chairman on November16 and he took over two days later. But the officials at the deputy speaker's office occupied the rooms. The speaker wrote to the deputy speaker on November 24 to vacate the rooms.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Sunday intervened and asked both the speaker and deputy speaker to minimise the rift between them.

But the deputy speaker's office tried to control the rooms till Wednesday.
