Yangon starts bridge work soon to link Dhaka

Myanmar will soon start constructing Tungbru Bridge for the proposed direct road link between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

This was disclosed when U Ohn Thwin, the outgoing Myanmar ambassador, made a farewell call on Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at her office yesterday afternoon.

The proposed highway would connect Yangon via Gundom of Bangladesh and Buthidong of Myanmar. It would enhance trade and commerce for both countries and connect peoples of the neighbouring countries, they observed.

Repatriation of Rohingya refugees will be expedited soon, Thwin assured the PM.

He also hoped bilateral relations would reach new highs in future.

He conveyed greetings of Myanmar's Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Prime Minister General Khin Nyaunt to Khaleda.

The PM thanked the envoy and sent an invitation to her counterpart in Myanmar to visit Bangladesh.
