Werder Bremen warmed up for Saturday's clash with Bayern Munich in fine style crushing Hertha Berlin 6-1 to move into the quarterfinals of the German Cup. Holders Bayern were also victorious easing to a 3-0 win over SV Hamburg a. A first half brace from Ivan Klasnic and further strike from French playmaker Johan Micoud saw Bremen head into the interval three goals to the good. Hertha lost 3-0 to Bremen on the opening day of the season but it was to be much worse this time around as Valerien Ismael (47), Brazilian striker Ailton (78) and Angelos Charisteas (84) completed the rout. Bayern, missing midfielder Michael Ballack, looked toothless in the early exchanges and it took a woeful stray pass from Christian Rahn to allow Claudio Pizarro to race clear and open the floodgates after 28 minutes. A lowly 10,000 crowd at the Olympic Stadium were handed more of an open spectacle in the second half with Dutchman Roy Makaay doubling the hosts' lead 120 seconds after the interval. Hasan Salihamidzic then sealed the win with a strike late on. SC Freiburg crashed 1-0 to minnows VfB Lubeck while Cologne lost on penalties to Greuther Furth leaving just three Bundesliga teams in the hat for the quarterfinal draw.
