Woman murdered to 'victimise' neighbour
Another killed to grab property

Two women were murdered at Gournadi and Charmonai in Barisal on Thursday and Tuesday.

Shafia Begum, 48, widow of late Abdur Rob Fakir of Gobordhon village under Gournadi thana, was found slaughtered on Thursday morning in her bedroom, police said.

Shafia had two sons and a daughter -- Fatima-- who live in Dhaka. Fatima divorced her husband Jahangir Talukder of the same village some months ago and went Dhaka to work at a garments factory leaving her daughter Dolan, 6, with her mother.

In the early hours of Thursday, some unidentified persons entered the house by breaking the door and slit Shafia's throat while she was asleep with Dolon.

Hearing Dolon's cries in the morning, neighbours rushed to the house and recovered the body.

Shafiais brother Yusuf Sarder lodged a case with Gournadi thana accusing her elder brother-in-law Sekander Fakir and son-in-law Jahangir Howlader.

Dispute over ownership of her property could be the reason behind the murder, police said.

Police arrested Sekander Fakir.

In another incident, a woman was murdered allegedly by her son-in-law Alamin with a motive to implicate his neigbour in a murder case.

The incident took place at Rajarchar village in Charmonai union under Barisal Kotwali thana.

Victim's family sources said Monju Begum, 47, came to the house of her son-in-law Alamin to attend delivery of her daughter Saju.

At about noon on Tuesday, Alamin was locked in a quarrel with his neighbor Ibrahim Munshi over demarcation of land property.

All of a sudden, Alamin hit his mother-in-law Monju in the head with a crowbar allegedly with a motive to lodge a case that his neighbour attacked his house and injured his mother-in -law.

But the blow was much harder than he had planned and she was fatally injured. He took her to a doctor at a local market. But she died at night.

Alamin is absconding since then.

Police said they visited the spot but a case is yet to be filed.
