Bangla Academy celebrates its 48th founding anniversary

It was back in 1955, December 3, when an academy was formed through the Language Movement in which many students embraced martyrdom. The institution was called Bangla Academy where many great people like Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah, Dr. Enamul Haque, Dr. Md. Kudrat-I-Khuda, Zainul Abedin, Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal and others were involved. The academy has given the nation a huge volume of books numbering to about 4500, dealing with world literature, philosophy, language, science and other topics.The academy celebrated its 48th founding anniversary recently. Professor Mohammad Maniruzzaman Mia presented the founding anniversary speech titled 'The challenge of twenty- first century and education' on the occasion. In his speech Professor Maniruzzaman talked on aspects like the main challenge in poverty alleviation, economic challenge: globalisation, environment problem: global warming, arsenic contamination, drought and flood, the importance of education in development and what should be done to face these challenges. Professor Mia suggested that education can be the solution for poverty alleviation and that we must revolutionalise our system of education. He said, 'We have no other alternative to development other than education in facing the twenty-first century challenge.' The chief guest of the programme State Minister for Cultural Affairs Begum Selima Rahman said, 'The Bangla Academy has offered the nation the best of world literature and also offered facilities for research.' Cultural Secretary Modabbir Hossain Chowdhury, Professor Wakil Ahmad and the Director General of the academy Mansur Musa also spoke on the occasion.
