Speaker, his deputy sit to bury hatchet

Both the speaker and deputy speaker held a closed-door meeting yesterday in a bid to thrash out their differences.

The prime minister last week intervened following press reports on the acrimony.

Deputy Speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui met Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar at the latter's office at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. However, no other officials were present at the speaker's chamber during the hour-long meeting.

On Friday, the speaker phoned Siddiqui and invited him to a talk over a cup of tea at his office.

"We talked about various issues including ways to run the House properly,'' Siddiqui told The Daily Star yesterday.

Officials at the speaker and the deputy speaker's office said both Sircar and Siddiqui were happy after the meeting.

During the last Jatiya Sangsad (JS) session, Sircar allowed a penal chairman to preside over the proceedings of the House ignoring the deputy speaker. Siddiqui accused the speaker of violating the constitution and rules of procedure of the JS.

After press reports about their acrimony, the PM intervened and asked both to minimise the rift on Monday.
