Ataur Rahman's anniversary of death today

The 12th death anniversary of Ataur Rahman Khan, former chief minister of erstwhile Pakistan, will be observed today.On this occasion, a milad mahfil and discussion will be held at his graveyard at Sher-e- Bangla nagar at 9.00am. Speaker Zamir Uddin Sircar will attend the discussion as chief guest while KM Obaidur Rahman MP and President of Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon will be the discussants. Born in 1905 at a respectable Muslim family of Dhamrai upazila under Dhaka district, Ataur Rahman Khan started his political career by joining the then Muslim League and was elected one of its joint- secretary in 1946. He was convenor of 'Rashtra Bhasha Sangram Committee' and played a vital role in forming 'Jukta Front' with Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardi and Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Hoque in 1954. He formed Jatiya League after the mass upsurge in 1969. Ataur Rahman Khan was elected member of parliament twice in independent Bangladesh in 1973 and 1979. He also played a vital role in organising anti-autocratic movement against the Ershad's regime. Alongside his political activities, Ataur Rahman Khan also wrote several books named Ojaratir Dui Bachhar, Swairacharer Dash Bachhar, Abaruddha Noy Mash and Prodhan Mantritter Noy Mash.
