Supporters of slain UP chairman torch 20 houses in Chandpur

Twenty houses in Motlab upazila were set ablaze yesterday in retaliation to the murder of a union parishad (UP) chairman in Dhaka on Friday.

Witnesses and victims said 14 houses at Ekhlaspur, five at Zahirabad and one at Farajikandi villages were set on fire by the supporters of slain UP chairman Azharul Huq.

Azhar, chairman of Ekhlaspur UP, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Pallabi in Dhaka.

"The miscreants poured petrol and set fire to my two houses," Alamgir Hossain of Farajikandi told the news agency.

"I have heard that 19 other houses were set on fire," said Police Superintendent Bakhtiar Alam.

Police have been deployed in the villages to fend off further incidents.

Meanwhile, the slain chairman was buried at his family graveyard at Ekhlaspur at 8 last night.
