MPs dine with HIV Carriers
Nasreen Huq, ActionAid Bangladesh
I would like to congratulate you for the sensitive coverage by your esteemed paper to the luncheon meeting between the lawmakers and HIV positive persons (Dec 3). By this bold gesture, the MPs have broken the culture of silence and shame that shrouds victims of HIV. As an eyewitness of that meeting, I can honestly state that I was moved by the commitment of the MPs and their sensitivity to the issue. They stated firmly that it is an accident which can happen to anybody and stressed the importance of universal precaution in all health facilities including dentist chambers, and barbershops and saloons where there are chances of injury and bleeding. They also emphasised the need for society to be supportive of HIV positive persons who have the potential to be the most powerful and committed advocates for prevention of the deadly virus.
