MSC kick off against Sheikh Russell

Holders Mohammedan Sporting Club take on newcomers Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra in the opening match of the Western Union Senior Division (Premier) Football League that starts in the capital from December 17.

The Dhaka Mahanagari Football League Committee announced the first leg fixture of league yesterday.

A total of 20 teams, 10 each in Premier and First Division, which kicks off a day later, will take part in the league that is being be sponsored by Western Union, an American-based money exchange company.

All matches of the Premier League will be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur while First Division games will be played both at the Sher-e-Bangla and Kamalapur Stadiums respectively.

This year organisers made a few major changes to the format.

They dispensed with their experimental Super Five or Three stages, which kept producing a lot of 'fixed' affairs over the years, and replaced them with a return leg instead. Besides, the tie-breaking system that was introduced in 2002 in the case of matches ending as draws has also been scrapped. It means teams will now be awarded a point each.

However, clubs can be allowed to field four foreign players per match as against three previously.

In the other fixture on the inaugural day last year's runners-up Abahani Krira Chakra meet Dhaka Wanderers Club.

Star-studded Brothers Union will be hoping to erase their first round elimination from the Federation Cup when the Gopibagh outfit launch their title bid against Arambagh Krira Chakra the next day. National League and Federation Cup champions Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra play Victoria Sporting Club in the evening.

Dhanmondi Club and Badda Jagarani Sangsad are the featured teams on December 19.
