Aftab joining camp today

Young right-handed batsman Aftab Ahmed is expected to join the Bangladesh under-19 team's training camp at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) today after remaining absent for 25 days.

The Development Committee of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) allowed the promising strokemaker in yesterday after he explained the reason for his no-show to committee chairman Arafat Rahman and member secretary Khondoker Jamiluddin on Tuesday.

Jamil told the Daily Star Sport yesterday that the Chittagong batsman was pressurised into not joining the camp for the coming ICC Under 19 World Cup by his mother who wanted her son to concentrate fully on his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations which starts in March next year.

"We have assured Aftab's family that he would be allowed to study in his off-time and if required, teachers of the Krira College of BKSP will help him so that he can prepare sufficiently for the SSC," said Jamil.

"The exam will start on March 5 and Aftab can appear without any problem if Bangladesh do not qualify for the Under-19 World Cup final which is incidentally on the same date. But there could be some difficulties if the hosts reach the final," Jamil added.

Aftab reportedly managed to convince the committee that he had bowed to his mother's wish as it was his third and last chance to appear in the SSC examinations. According to the system of the Education Board, his registration would be cancelled if he doesn't appear this time around after failing to pass the last two examinations.

"We need him badly because we have invested a lot on him. Coach Richard McInnes has also agreed to take back Aftab," Jamil said.

Aftab was absent from the camp since Bangladesh Under-19 team returned from Pakistan on November 15.
