Faulty fare-meter?
A Mahasen, Dhaka-1207
I found that the CNG autorickshaws and one Mishuk displayed the same fare on the meter between the same two points ( Stadium/Baitul Mukarrum gate and Mohammadpur Post Office). I had presumed the Mishuk fare to be less. In fact, two days earlier I had travelled the same distance in a Mishuk and paid Tk 35 [without meter]. In the former case, the Mishuk driver offered to go by the meter when I asked him the fare (I had not noticed the meter initially). I was rather surprised for two reasons: the driver voluntarily offering to go by the meter, and the fact that the Mishuk had the meter fitted. The question arises whether some unauthorised meters are being used (it is a racket as usual), and the monitoring agencies are not vigilant enough to carry out surprise checks. In fact, the shape, size and colour of these two types of fare-meters should be different for instant identification by the passengers. I could not note down the number of the offending Mishuk as it was not displayed inside the vehicle, as per normal international regulation. Thus it appears that fare-meters are no solution in this corrupt country, where the whole chain of operation is corrupt!
