VCs these days

In response to my letter dated 2-12-2003 one of my students, Tarik Zaman from the University of Sydney, Australia recorded his observations on the above subject vide his letter published in the Daily Star of December 5, 2003.

Well, thanks to Tarik for initiating some burning issues. But why the appointments of VCs become too much political in these days needs a thorough review of the whole situation. Not only the present government, the immediate past government did the same thing. How unfortunate and disgraceful it is to find an honourable ex-VC of a university, no less than Dhaka University, currently facing a criminal charge of attempt to murder!

However, the point which inspired me to file the appeal under reference was actually to fix the VC's status within the bureaucracy, precisely with secretary. In fact, it is not clear whether the status of a vice chancellor is above or below the status of a secretary.

Further, I learned that the authorities at higher levels often ignore protocol in inviting and receiving VCs at national functions.

Meanwhile, Tarik in his letter has requested me to look at my own backyard. Fair enough. The fact is, the vice chancellor of our university, that is, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Prof. AM Farooque is a highly qualified and internationally known agricultural scientist who made valuable contributions in the field of Horticulture which includes development of some fruit varieties. I have enough marks to trust that his appointment is genuine and he is running the varsity quite efficiently, upholding the professional matters above politics.

Finally, Tarik has asked the teacher community itself to ponder why the position of a VC as well as of the teachers is increasingly less valued ? Good. But before we start pondering upon the above point, I would like to raise some questions why the nation, particularly the governments, have miserably failed to keep the teacher community out of politics? Why political affiliation becomes an important qualification for becoming a VC and why the teachers need to go under a political umbrella??

Let the campuses remain free of political banners and let the teachers stay and work within the domain of their noble profession.
