Five ansars linked to Shibir's bomb making
Staff Correspondent, Khulna
Five ansars yesterday appeared in court on count of abetting Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists in making handmade bombs in an abandoned residential hotel in Khulna city. Noor Mohammad, 35, Rajab Ali, 26, Humayun Kabir, 24, Hamidur Rahman, 26, and Matiur Rahman (age unknown), recruited as ansars in 1999, have been named as accused under the Explosives Act in the first information report. A police raid yielded arrests of seven people on Wednesday night as a bomb exploded on impact on the first floor of the multistorey Rupsha International Hotel, severely injuring Rubel, Bashar, Faruque and Hasan, believed to be part of the ICS. Police seized eight live bombs, explosives, footwear, hats and masks and arrested the Shibir cadres on charge of running a bomb-making factory before sending them to court yesterday. Police sealed the hotel Shibir activists used as their hideout with the ansars on guard as camouflage. Leaders of the ICS disowned the injured young men as its activists. But Rubel told interrogators that his father was an influential leader of Phultala unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, the backer of the ICS. Rubel also said during interrogation that they were all Shibir activists.
