JS body blames TCB for price control failure

A parliamentary standing committee yesterday started examining the necessity of having an organisation like Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

The committee on the commerce ministry formed a sub-committee to look into the TCB activities at its meeting in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The lawmakers at the meeting felt the government could have controlled the price hike of essentials had the TCB been active.

"The TCB appears to be a dead organisation now. We will review whether the organisation should be allowed to operate in controlling prices of essentials," Redwan Ahmed, chairman of the committee, told The Daily Star yesterday.

The newly formed sub-committee, headed by Monirul Haque Chowdhury, was asked to submit its report at the next meeting.

Besides, the committee scrutinised The Insurance Act 1938 (amendment) bill and recommended placing it before parliament.
