Saddam's impending trial
Edward Al-Hussainy, Washington, DC
I find the assertions expressed by a Dhaka University student (Jan. 2) and Mr. Ahmed (Jan. 2) to be quite unfortunate. The evidence presented in support of the original justification for the invasion of Iraq by the US-led coalition -- pre-emption of Saddam's acquisition of weapons of mass destruction -- is indeed questionable. However, opposition to the US-led invasion notwithstanding, Iraq's mass graves, torture chambers, and rape rooms speak volumes to the nature of the crimes against the people of Iraq perpetrated by Saddam's regime. For brevity, I shall avoid a discussion of the details here; interested readers should consult http://www.hrw.org/campaigns/iraq for a record of crimes against humanity in Iraq, including human rights violations by the US occupation force, compiled by the independent Human Rights Watch. In debating the crisis in Iraq, we must be careful not to let our perspectives be relegated to the margins of history, along with the views of those who deny, to this day, the atrocities committed by the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Ceausescu.
