January 09, 2004       Letters to Editor Mayhem in Afghanistan Molla Mohammad Shaheen Department of English Dhaka University Afghanistan has been liberated from Taliban rule by Uncle Sam, but political turmoil remains rampant. An elected government is still a far cry. After a marathon hassle, the Loya Jirga of Afghanistan has come to consensus to ratify its constitution. Poverty and lawlessness are the main features of this country. The Madrid Conference is a real fiasco. World leaders did not fulfil their pledges to rebuild Afghanistan. Hamid Karzai is a puppet of Bush. Despite its nominal revenue, warlords earn and launder a lot of money through smuggling and the drug trade. A general election is vital to revive Afghanistan and UN trusteeship should be enhanced. I hope situation in Afghanistan will be normalised soon.
