Roy salvages local hopes

Amol Roy stole the limelight on the second day of the Sheltech Group 3 Bangladesh International Junior Tennis Championship at the Ramna National Tennis Complex yesterday.

Amol, one of the four wild card entrants for the hosts in the boys' section, crossed the first round barrier with a 2-1 set victory over Indian Anshuman Dutta. While Amol advanced, the other three local boys predictably crashed out with putting up little or no resistance.

Amol came from behind to win the exciting three-setter 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. He will take on another Indian Navdeep Singh in the next round.

Great Britain's Farris Khatib, who won the Rajshahi leg boys' singles title last week, got off to a sound start in his pursuit for a double with a 6-0, 7-5 victory against Peerapanch Tupwan of Thailand.

Australian youngster Myles Blake also scored a straight 6-0, 6-2 win over Baygulov Tagat of Uzbekistan. He will take on Andrei Poltnye of Russia in the next round.

Chris Eaton of Great Britain set up a second round clash with India Rupesh Roy after defeating Bangladesh's Murad Hossain 6-1, 6-1. Rupesh scored a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win against South Korea's Yun Hyung Seol.
