National anthem and cell phones
Shabbir Choudhury, On e-mail
This is in reply to Mr. Nazrul Islam's letter published on February 23. I believe those who use our national anthem are patriots. I am thousands of miles away from my home. And every time the ringer tone is on, I feel proud to be a Bangladeshi.***With due respect to Mr. Nazrul Islam and all others concerned, I don't think that our national anthem should not be used as a ringer for cell phones. This is mainly because I think that most of the people are doing this out of patriotism. And the same goes for hoisting the national flag anywhere. Coming back to the cell phone ringer, if Indians can have "Saare jahan se achcha.." ringer and they feel proud about it, what is wrong if we use our national anthem as a cell phone ringer? But then again, do not get me wrong. I do not mean that we have to do this just because Indians have a deshattobodhok tune. There is no competition. It would be better if we look at this or similar activities just as an act of patriotism. I refuse to accept Mr. Islam's assertion that people are doing this out of complete ignorance.
