Dhaka-Sylhet train

I totally agree with Mr. Nazrul Islam Sumon as he narrated his experiences about the Dhaka-Sylhet route in The Daily Star on February 25, 2004. Not only the road link between Dhaka-Sylhet is bad and time-consuming, but also tickets of train are available only if you pay some extra money.

If you don't book your ticket well in advance, you will not get the ticket from Sylhet to Dhaka. You have to book a ticket at least three days earlier if you want a seat. Tickets of chair coach and first class are seldom available. Still, you can have tickets from hawkers staying outside, waiting for you. Obviously, you have to pay extra money.

I have the experience that I did not get any ticket from the counter for Sylhet to Dhaka a week before. However, I managed it from outside and certainly those people have a strong link with the staff of the railway. Things are not much better at the Dhaka station. Moreover, extra money is sometimes demanded from the counter as well.

Again, the newly-built Sylhet railway station is not being inaugurated for months. We have heard that the prime minister couldn't make time to inaugurate the station. How long should we wait for its inauguration?
