200 students expelled on the first day


Some 200 examinees were expelled for cheating on the first day of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations yesterday, according to reports received from across the country.

The examinations began amid tight security with imposition of Section 144 in and around the centres and other tough measures including summary trial.

However, 14 teachers--four in Mymensingh and 10 in Barisal -- were expelled for their alleged involvement in helping the examinees cheating.

A total of 78 examinees were expelled from different examination centres under Rajshahi Education Board. Of them, 14 were expelled in Kurigram, 11 in Sirajganj, eight each in Pabna and Gaibandha, one each in Chapainawabganj and Natore, six in Naogaon, five in Bogra, nine

in Rangpur, three each in Lalmonirhat and Dinajpur, two in Thakurgaon and four in Panchagarh.

In Dhaka Board, a total of 48 examinees were expelled. Of them, 16 were expelled in Jamalpur, eight in Netrakona, seven in Mymensingh, five in Gopalganj, three each in Narsingdi, Faridpur, and Sripur, one each in Tangail and Rajbari.

As many as 10 students were expelled under Chittagong Board, while 21 were expelled from different centres under Jessore Board.

Three examinees were expelled in Laxmipur, two in Noakhali, one each in Comilla and Chandpur under Comilla Board.

Our staff correspondent from Sylhet adds: Three SSC examinees were expelled under Sylhet Education Board. Of them, two were expelled from Chunarughat centre under Habiganj district and one was expelled from Sunamganj sadar centre.

Our Barisal correspondent reported that 29 examinees and 10 teachers were expelled from different centres. Of the teachers, three were expelled from Jhalakathi centre, six from Agailjhara centre and one was expelled from Ujirpur centre.

State Minister for Education ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon yesterday visited some centres in Khagrachhari and Rangamati hill districts in a helicopter.
