AL demands withdrawal of police from party office

The leaders of the main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday demanded immediate withdrawal of police from the party's central office.

They said at a press conference at party's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue that days of the ruling alliance are numbered and recent atrocities on political opponents are nothing but a last bite to cling to power.

"A simultaneous movement against the BNP-Jamaat-led coalition will begin on March 6 with the countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal, which is an onset to topple the alliance," AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil told newspersons.

He accused the government of using law enforcers and ruling alliance cadres to thwart the anti-government movement.

Jalil criticised Wednesday's attack by police and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the BNP, on Dhaka University students, who were protesting deadly attack on Dr Humayun Azad.

He said it is clear now who were angered by the writings of Dr Azad and who tried to kill him. "The defeated forces of the Liberation War are liable for the killing attempt."

On police allegation of hurling a bomb to a cop from the AL office, Jalil said, "No human being could cover such a distance from our office. It's a pre-arranged drama of the government."

On March 1, police raided the AL central office, clubbed the opposition leaders and activists indiscriminately and hauled at least 150 of them following a blast that injured a police havildar.

Jalil said filing of a case against the police for illegally breaking the party office's gates is underway.

Abdus Samad Azad, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Suranjit Sengupta, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Kader and Mukul Bose, among others, were present.
