Inescapable hartal !
Chowdhoury Mohibul Hassan. London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Law department
I might sound insane if I say that the recent Hartals were rather necessary and inescapable. We have witnessed and learned many things from the recent wave of anti-government protests. The government's utterly shameful tactics in dealing with the opposition; a wave of fundamentalist and ruling party terror throughout the whole country; and numerous human rights violations against the Awami League and other party activists are what we have witnessed. I suppose the BNP has forgotten the lessons they learned in their previous term, they are too inclined to undermine the power of the people. They must not forget that they only got the highest number of seats in parliament mainly because of the complex mathematics of the four-party alliance. The Awami league remains the single biggest party with the highest percentage of votes, thus a huge proportion of the country's voters and their support still rest with the party.
