Hindu temple, caretaker's house torched in Gaibandha for toll

Failing to realise toll, local hoodlums torched a Hindu temple along with the house of its caretaker and ransacked six dwellings, injuring at least 15 people in the attack.

They also damaged three images of Hindu goddesses and looted eleven cattle along with goods worth over Tk four lakh.

The incident took place at Kumardanga village in Gobindaganj upazila on Saturday.

Villagers chased the hoodlums, caught one of them --Mozaher-- and handed him over to police.

On information police from Gobindaganj thana rushed there.

Additional Police Superintendent Musfiqur Rahman and Gobindaganj Upazila Nirbahee Officer (UNO) also visited the spot.

Police and villagers said the parliament member from the area (Gobindaganj-4 constituency) allocated one ton wheat for the development of the temple.

Knowing this, some local hoodlums allegedly led by Azaher Ali demanded Tk 10,000 toll from the temple's caretaker Sreedham Chandra.

On refusal, they first torched the house of Sreedham Chandra and then the temple.

They then took their wrath on neighouurs, beating them indiscriminately and ransacking houses, the villagers said.

Five of the inured including two women were removed to hospital. They are Bina Rani, Nira Chandra, Nirjjon Sarker Dhalu, Nannu Sarker and Subhashini Sarker.
