Pakistan fell short by five runs during the high-scoring thriller in the opening one-dayer at Karachi on Saturday, making 344-8 in reply to India's 349-7.

"We should have won after coming so close," Miandad said ahead of Tuesday's second international to be played under lights at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

"As a coach, I felt disappointed and have told the players to grab the opportunity next time.

"It was due to inexperience we lost. I want my team not to lose control in such tight situations. Hopefully the difference will be there."

Miandad was himself regarded as one of the best finishers in the game, once scoring a six off the final delivery at Sharjah in 1986 to beat India in a one-day final.

In Karachi, Pakistan needed 17 off the last two overs but lost the seventh wicket of Shoaib Malik in the penultimate over to a brilliant catch at long-on by Mohammad Kaif.

"One-day matches are like that, you take one good catch or commit a mistake while batting and the game is over for you," Miandad said.

When Indian paceman Ashish Nehra bowled the last ball of the match, Pakistan needed a six to carry the day but Moin Khan holed out in the deep.

"You can't get a six off the last ball every time," Miandad said when asked what the result would be if he had had the strike.

He conceded Pakistan's major problem in Karachi was the 38 extras his team conceded, including 20 no-balls and 10 wides which gave India five bonus overs to bat.

"I have worked on this aspect and the difference will be noticed on Tuesday," he said.

Miandad said he had left the decision whether to include a sixth bowler up to captain Inzamamul Haq.

"If we include a sixth bowler some people will say we are one batsman short, but let the captain decide," he said.

Pakistan is likely to include pacer Shabbir Ahmed who missed the first match due to a finger injury.
