Premiere of Megher Porey Megh on Channel-i

Several films have been made on the Liberation War. The latest in the genre is Megher Porey Megh, directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam. As with its two previous productions, Impress Telefilms Ltd will première the movie on television first. Slated to be aired on Channel-i on the Independence Day of Bangladesh, March 26, the script depicts the humanitarian aspects of our Liberation War and is based on litterateur Rabeya Khatun's novel of the same name.

The shooting of Megher Porey Megh began on December 1, last year at its outdoor locations in Srinagar, Munshiganj and Comilla. The film's music director is Imon Saha.

Describing the film, Chashi Nazrul Islam says, 'I liked the story line of Megher Porey Megh. The sacrifice and the battle of a brave nation against the oppression of the Pakistan army have been well presented in this film. There is also a social message for the younger generation: that they should not lose the spirit of the independence movement and should be aware of their duty towards the country.'

The cast of the film includes Riaz, Purnima, Mahfuz, Shahidul Alam Sachchu, Khaleda Akter Kalpana and many more.

Chashi regrets that many of us regard people who follow the Islamic code of life as either fundamentalists or Razakars (collaborators) in relation to the Liberation War. 'The truth is that they were not all fundamentalists; even if they were fundamentalists, all of them were not Razakars. Many pious people took active part in the war in favour of Bangladesh or at least helped the freedom fighters in many ways,' he says.

Megher Porey Megh presents this aspect of the Liberation War through the character of Nishat Ali, performed by Mahfuz Ahmed. In the film Nishat studies Arabic at Dhaka University and takes part in the Liberation War. The director hopes that the viewers will enjoy his treatment of the film and the subject which has spawned many works of art.
