1 handed death, 5 life for killing ex-MP Sujan

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced one person to death and four others including Dr Rawshan Alam, a BNP leader, to life imprisonment for killing former BNP MP Shahjahan Howlader Sujan.Judge AR Masud of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 sentenced Kajol Ahmed Jalali to death, while Dr Alam, Humayun Kabir alias Phool Miah, Ziauddin alias Bayes and Ibrahim Noor alias Apu were given life for the murder. Of the convicts, Dr Rawshan Alam, proprietor of Libra Pharmaceuticals and Phool Miah were present in the court, while Kajol Jalali, Bayes and Apu were tried in absentia. The tribunal fined Dr Alam with TK one lakh, in default one more year of rigorous imprisonment (RI). It also fined the rest three convicts, sentenced to life-Bayes, Phool Miah and Apu, with TK 50,000, in default one year more RI. The judge, however, acquitted Khorshed Alam, Abdul Mannan alias VP Mannan,Akhter Hossain, Forkan Uddin, kamal Ahmed, Giasuddin jalali and Faruq,of the murder. He said the charges of death penalty against Dr Alam were proved but considering his old age, he was given life term. Hena Akhter, mother of the victim broke into tears as the verdict was pronounced. She said that she was not satisfied with the judgment. Victim's family will appeal to the High Court against the judgment. Sujan, 35, a former BNP MP from Brahmanbaria-6 constituency and former vice president of Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall Students Union of Dhaka University, was abducted by his rivals and found dead near the Doyel Chattar on the Dhaka University campus on July 3, 2001.
