Naga rebels call truce with rivals
AFP, Guwahati
A key rebel group yesterday declared a unilateral truce with its rivals in the northeastern Indian state of Nagaland, brightening hopes of ending more than five decades of insurgency. The S.S. Khaplang-led faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) said it would observe a truce with all other rebels including its main rival, the NSCN branch led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. It said the ceasefire would begin Sunday, the anniversary of the NSCN's 1980 declaration of independence for Nagaland, a hill province bordering Myanmar. The NSCN broke into two in 1988 and a turf war between the factions has since claimed an estimated 5,000 lives.
