Death in road accident sparks violent protest

The death of a college student in a road accident in the city's Tilagarh area triggered a violent protest yesterday.

Sadhan Chandra Sarker, a student of the MC College, was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck when he tried to cross the road at about 10.00am. He died on the spot and the driver sped away.

Agitated students put up a barricade on Sylhet-Tamabil highway and went on a rampage. About 20 minibuses and trucks were damaged during the three-hour road blockade.

The barricade was removed at around 1.00pm following the intervention of police, college authorities and administrative officials.

The body was sent to the medical college hospital for autopsy.

Sadhan hailed from village Chandpur under Khaliajuri thana of Netrakona district.
