DU to name dorm after Khaleda, not Sufia Kamal

Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to construct a hall for female students after the name of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, brushing aside a committee's suggestion that it be named after poet Begum Sufia Kamal.

At a syndicate meeting with Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz in the chair, the university authorities recently took the decision, but the date for the start of construction works was not finalised.

In 2001, former prime minister and now Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina announced to build a 500-seat hall for female students of the DU on a piece of Bangladesh Railway land behind Curzon Hall.

The authorities then formed a three-member committee headed by Prof Kazi Shahidullah, former dean of Arts Faculty and chairman of history department. The committee placed its report to the then government and made the suggestion about its name.

The committee also presented a project concept paper before the education ministry for construction works of the proposed hall at a cost of Tk 27 crore.

Prof Faiz said they took the decision at a syndicate meeting adding, "The final decision on the issue will be taken after discussion with different quarters and obtaining permission from the prime minister."
