U-14 Football Festival on
UNB, Dhaka
Hosts Bangladesh made an auspicious start in the opening match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Football Festival securing 58.86 points with a 1-0 win against Sri Lanka at Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. The Sri Lankans also earned 37.71 points from the match as per the format of the youthful tournament. Under the new format intended to highlight fair play, a team may trail by points even after winning a match. Four Bangladesh players received newly introduced green cards to earn 40 points for the team while three Sri Lankan booters did so to collect 30 points for their team. However one Lankan player, Devinda Bandara, was cautioned with yellow card to lose two points from the team's total earning. A different scenario was witnessed in the match as players came forward to nurse their injured rivals by sending the ball outside. And the teenaged footballers were found apologising to the referee for their offences. Substitute right-winger Rashedul Islam Biplob put Bangladesh ahead in the 39th minute with a fine touch from very close after successfully dodging three Lankan defenders.
