Illegal Dam in Buri River in B'baria
25,000 acres of Boro lands affected

An unauthorised dam on the Buri river is affecting irrigation of about 25,000 acres of IRRI-Boro lands in three unions under Nabinagar upazila in the district.

The affected unions are Kaitola, Bitgher and Lourpathehpur.

Some influential farmers in Mehari union under Kasba upazila have built the unanthorised dam across the Buri river to irrigate their lands.

This has stopped flow of the river water to Kaitola, Bitgher and Lourpathehpur unions, farmers there claimed.

Farmers in the 20 affected villages in the three unions

tried to resolve the matter locally but failed.

Later they lodged a complaint to the Nabinagor Upazila Nirbahi Office to solve the problem soon.

When contacted, sources at the UNO office said they have taken steps to cut the dam there to ensure flow of the river water to the three unions.
