Close down Taiwanese office in Dhaka
Chinese envoy urges govt as he meets FBCCI chief
Star Business Report
China yesterday requested Bangladesh again to immediately close down the Taiwanese office in Dhaka for the sake of 'long term interest' of the two countries. At a meeting with Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Abdul Awal Mintoo, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Chai Xi dismissed the FBCCI chief's claim that the office belongs to a private trade body. "If Bangladesh believes in one China policy, no Taiwan office can be opened here as a separate entity and this is not a private office at all," the ambassador said. "This office should be closed down immediately or downgraded to the status of business office only." The Chinese envoy said Taiwan is running the office as a government wing and it is considering a success to its international diplomacy through opening the office. He said the recent development has created a lot of sensation in Beijing and this must be resolved in the interest of maintaining friendly relationship between the two countries, according to a press statement of FBCCI. The FBCCI chief said he would approach the Prime Minister andother related government offices to work out a reasonable solution to the issue.
