Twisters kill 3 in Meherpur, Mymensingh

Tornadoes hit the capital, Meherpur, Natore and Mymensingh yesterday, killing three and injuring over 150 people yesterday.The Meteorological Department in Dhaka said a nor'wester packing a wind speed of 72 kilometres an hour lashed the capital for around 45 minutes from 10:15pm, uprooting scores of trees and disrupting electric supply in many parts especially in Mirpur and Zia International Airport (ZIA) areas. The storm delayed landing of a Biman flight from Chittagong at the ZIA. Fire service sources reported no major damage in the city. At Meherpur, a twister hit Gangni upazila yesterday evening, leaving two people dead and over 50 injured. The district administration failed to provide identities of the victims immediately. The storm uprooted trees, damaged several hundred houses and crops. Our Mymensingh correspondent reports: A nor'wester hit Sadar, Bhaluka, Trishal, Gafargaon and Phulbaria upazilas of the district at 7:30pm yesterday. The tornado killed an unidentified woman aged about 50 at Utheera village in Bhaluka upazila. Another nor'wester that ripped through 12 villages in Lalpur upazila in Natore in the vicinity of the river Padma yesterday left over 100 people, including women and children, wounded. Hospital sources said some 1,000 houses were damaged in the storm that began in the evening. Seven of the injured -- Jamela, Mofiz, Rahim, Daud, Bishu, Mofez and Shahadat -- were admitted to the local hospital.
