Sexual Abuse
SUST students demand arrest of JCD man

Thousands of agitating students of the Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) yesterday brought out a procession and held a rally in the campus demanding punitive actions against the JCD cadre and his accomplices who allegedly sexually abused a fellow student.

The students kept the acting vice chancellor confined in his office since noon till 6pm. They laid siege to the Administrative Building and held a rally there.

For the last two days a tense situation prevailed in the campus as a frenzy of anti-agitation activity ran parallel to the preparation for the agitation programme by the general students. At about 10pm on Saturday 10 gunshots were fired at the girls dormitory area. The JCD faction, favouring the alleged abuser held a meeting the same night and decided to resist yesterday's protest rally and procession, sources said.

The JCD faction led by the former president and General secretary of the SUST unit of JCD yesterday forcibly stopped plying of the varsity buses.

However, the Transport Administrator of the varsity Dr. Habibul Ahsan said the authority was compelled to cancel the buses to avoid the rush of outsiders to the campus.

The anti-agitation JCD faction brought out a procession in an apparent attempt to create panic

among the students who are protesting the abuse and demanding harsher punishment of the culprit. They also tried to stop the protesters and misbehaved with some of teachers in a bid to thwart the programme that featured rally and a procession at about noon, but to no avail, witnesses said.

The procession was brought out and participated by about 3000 students and teachers. Several gunshots echoed through the campus during the procession in presence of police.
