The greatest Bengalee
Asifur Rahman Mahi, Uttara, Dhaka
I did not vote for the poll. So the result does not bear my opinion. It might be same for many of 140 million Bengalees, who did not or could not vote in that poll. But even then the results bear some significance. Bangabandhu was voted as the Greatest Bengalee. It shows how important it was for the Bengalees to have a country of their own. The creation of 'Bangladesh' is the most significant incident in our history. So it is no surprise that the leader of that most significant incident would be adjudged the greatest Bengalee. But I am mainly concerned about the next two figures. Rabindranath and Nazrul. It is no surprise too. But still it demonstrates the role of these two literary figures in the life of Bengalees. Politicians, scientists and religious preachers are always important figures in the history. But literary figures are not always so. But in our lives these two men were much too important. I would not have been surprised if I saw them in the first two positions. Another point to note is, no other literary figures could make their way through in this list.
