Jalil still sticks to 'trump card'

Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday said his party will use the much-talked-about trump card to unseat the BNP-led coalition government by April-30 as four days are still there before the deadline expires. "The last week of April is yet to end," he said while replying to a question at a press briefing at the AL's Dhanmondi office. Earlier this month, Jalil said the trump card his party held to dislodge the government would be played in the last week of the month. All eyes are now set on the AL trump card. Pressed by journalists yesterday, Jalil said "Time to play the trump card has not come, we will play it in due time. So, we cannot reveal the contents of the trump card before the time comes." Asked about AL's programmes for April 30, Jalil replied "We will celebrate our victory." As part of the agitation in the run-up to April 30, the AL will observe protest across the country today and dawn-to- dusk hartal tomorrow and the day after. The AL organised the press briefing to protest Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's allegations against the AL at a BNP Parliamentary Party meeting on Sunday. Jalil accused the PM of making false allegations against the AL and said, "I challenge the PM to produce evidence of her allegations, including hatching conspiracy against the government." Khaleda Zia's remarks only show she has a nervous breakdown and is sensing conspiracy all around her, Jalil added. She always shivers hearing about AL conspiracy, which is non-existent, the AL leader remarked. " The prime minister has committed the crime of lying. So, she has to resign," Jalil said. He also said the government has resorted to repression on the opposition fearing public support and participation in the movement for its ouster. Jalil demanded immediate release of all victims of 'mass arrests' in the past week. AL presidium members and senior AL MPs and leaders were present at the briefing.
