Moudud defends mass arrests to foil AL plan
Staff Correspondent
Law Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday defended the government step of arrests aimed at foiling the main opposition Awami League's (AL's) April 30 deadline for toppling the ruling coalition. Talking to newspersons at his Secretariat office yesterday, he said all government measures, including the current arrest of suspects, were taken to maintain peace. Terming the AL's deadline as an illegal announcement to unseat a constitutional, elected and legal government, he said: "It's not possible for any legal government to keep silent at such an illegal threat." Moudud alleged the main opposition gathered criminals, weapons and explosives to create indiscipline in the capital. Rejecting the term 'mass arrest', he said the police were arresting only criminals and crime suspects. There may be some harassment of innocent people, but all government steps aimed to ensure people's welfare.
