HC fines RU Tk 5,000 for harming student

The High Court (HC) yesterday fined Rajshahi University Tk 5,000 for harming a brilliant student who appealed for re-examining his answer script of a subject four years ago.

The court ordered the university to re-examine the answer script of Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan in a month.

The court in its judgement observed, "It's a heinous act ...The shameful example set by Rajshahi University by keeping the prayer pending years after years ignoring the importance of career of a brilliant student is disgraceful."

Mannan appeared in LL.B (Hons) examinations held in 1999 and secured 62.5 percent marks in 15 out of 16 papers. He was given only 32 marks in administrative law. Aggrieved by the result, he applied to the vice-chancellor to re-examine the answer script on October 24, 2000, but the authorities did not pay heed to his appeal.

Meanwhile, Mannan stood first class first in the Master of Law, securing 65 percent marks.

He filed a writ with the High Court challenging the inaction of Rajshahi University in October 2002. The bench comprising Justice ABM Khairul Huq and Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury yesterday made absolute the rule issued earlier on the university.

Advocate Mohammad Tajul Islam appeared for the petitioner while advocate Abdus Sobhan for Rajshahi University.
