Mass Arrests
CPB stages mass hunger strike

The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) yesterday staged mass hunger strike to protest against 'mass arrests of innocent civilians and repression of democratic agitation programmes by opposition parties, including the Awami League.'

Expressing solidarity, intellectuals and politicians from other political parties also joined the token strike in front of the CPB office from 11:00am to 5:00pm.

CPB President Manzurul Ahsan Khan condemned the mass arrests of over 15,000 in the past week. "These mass arrests will be the final nail in the ruling coalition's coffin," he told the gathering.

"This incident will ignite a revolt and detach the government further from the masses."

CPB General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim said this kind of arrests is a sheer violation of human rights.

Kabir Chowdhury, Shahriar Kabir, Syed Abdul Maksud, Muntasir Mamun, Mahfuza Khanam, Mamtaz Latif, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Golum Kuddus, Zead Al-Malum, Mumtaz Latif, Saifuddin Ahmed Manik, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu, and Siddiquir Rahman were also present and addressed the rally.
