Rabbani laid to rest


Commodore Golam Rabbani, managing director of Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) and former chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, was laid to rest at Banani Military Graveyard in the city yesterday.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at 10:00am at Bangladesh Army Stadium. Ministers, chiefs of the three services, MPs, high military and civil officials and relatives of the deceased attended his janaza.

Brig. General M Sharifuddin, military secretary to the prime minister, placed a wreath on the coffin on behalf of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Later, Naval Chief Rear Admiral Shah Iqbal Mujtaba, on behalf of the Bangladesh Navy, and representatives from other organisations placed wreaths on the coffin.

Earlier on Sunday, his body was flown in here from Bangkok by Thai Airways.

Rabbani was shot by unidentified assailants while he along with five others was going to KEPZ site at Anwara in Chittagong in a microbus on April 11. He was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.

Rabbani was sent to Bamrungrad Hospital in Bangkok for treatment on April 14 where he died on April 24.
