Two get 40 years for killing one

A Dhaka Court on Saturday sentenced two people to 40 years' rigorous imprisonment for killing a projectionist of Film Development Corporation (FDC) 15 years ago.The convicts are Mofizul Islam alias Babul, an employee of the FDC, and Nizamuddin alias Nirob, a pump operator of the Zahura Market at Bangla Motor. Judge Mohammad Sirajul Islam of the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court gave the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom in presence of the convicts. The court, however, acquitted another accused Mohammad Badiul Alam alias Abu as the charges brought against him were not proved. According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped Hassan Bari Chowdhury alias Kiran from his residence at Bangla Motor at about 10:30pm on September 8, 1989 as he protested their immoral activities. Later, they took the victim to the roof-top of a three-storied building at Zahura Market, strangled him and dumped the body in a lane of the market. Of the accused, Babul and Nirob gave confessional statements to magistrates during the investigation of the case. Special Public Prosecutor PP Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan and APP Sohel Mullick appeared for the state while advocate ABM Sharfuddin Khan Mukul defended the accused.
