Tête-à-tête
A playwright with a string of hits
Pantha Shahriar talks about his mega serials

After the successful introduction of the package programme, Pantha Shahriar is among the few young talented artistes who has established himself as a playwright, director, and performer.

Pantha emerged as a playwright through a popular mega serial Bandhan. He says, 'Initially, along with Giasuddin Selim and Nurul Alam Atik, I jointly wrote the mega serial, which continued for 50 episodes. Later, Azad Abul Kalam and I continued it up to 145 episodes. After that the production of Bandhan was halted because of the cessation of Ekushey.'

After Bandhan, Pantha has never looked back. In rapid succession, he has been writing mega serials such as Griho Galpo and Share Tin Tola.

He says, 'I do not think that the story line of the mega serials is stereotyped. Though, all the serials are single family oriented, the structure is different in each of the plays. In Bandhan, Hayat's family represents a higher middle-class, which moved from the older part of the city to the new.

'In the case of Griho Galpo and Share Tin Tola, the story line is different. Griho Galpo is a story of four friends who share their experiences with each other. Share Tin Tola represents another aspect of family life. Here the elder brother born in the village comes to the city while the younger one grows up in the city.

'Recently, I have started another mega serial titled Sporsher Bairey, which I conceptualised. It is also a family play. However, the play presents some human traits. Through the play we represent the changing mindset of an individual at different stages of life.'

Pantha does not believe that the credit of making a good TV play goes solely to the director. He says, 'I strongly oppose those who believe that the director is the key person in a quality TV play. My question is what can a director do without the support of a rich script? May be he is changing some dialogues or some sequences but he is directing the play based on the story line provided by the playwright. Moreover, I like to ask them why they cast renowned performers for the play.'

Going back to the start of his career, Pantha says, 'I am from a cultural family. In 1992, I first started working in Drama Circle. Later, I moved to Nagorik Natyasamprodaya in 1995. After a certain stage as a regular member of the group I developed a very good relationship with Afsana Mimi. And then, I started writing TV plays for her productions.'

'As a theatre worker I have directed plays for some schools and have done light designs for a North South University theatre club production. Now, I am playing the role of the protagonist in Nagorik's current production Kopiniker Captain.'

He appreciates the introduction of the package programme in the country. He says, ' It has become the profession of many artistes. Like me, many young talents now have a scope to prove their talent. Moreover, even the seniors are able to contribute in unique ways. For example, in Griho Galpo, we have introduced popular film actor ATM Shamsuzzaman. He moves away from the typical role of a villain in the film industry. Now, he is immersed in TV plays.'
