29 submit papers for JS by-polls


A total of 29 people have submitted nomination papers for running the June 6 parliamentary by-polls in Dhaka-10 and Munshiganj-1 constituencies.

Yesterday was the last day for submission of nominations and 24 people filed their papers for Dhaka-10 (Ramna-Tejgaon) while five for Munshiganj-1 (Sreenagar), according to a press release of the Election Commission (EC).

The two seats fell vacant as Abdul Mannan, elected from Dhaka-10, and former president Badruddoza Chowdhury's son Mahi B Chowduhry, elected from Munshiganj-1, resigned from their respective constituencies on March 10 to join the former president's newly floated political party Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB).

Candidates for Dhaka-10 constituency are Mosaddak Ali Falu (four-party alliance), Abdul Mannan (BDB), Azam Khan (Jatiya Party-JP), Habibur Rahman, Ahmad Anwar ul Amin, Saiful Islam Chowdhury, Khandakar Shahadat Hossain, Abu Hamidur Reza Khan Bhashani, Jahangir Alam, SI Islam Milon, Mohammad Sadek, Sohel Chowdhury, Baharan-e-Sultan Bahar, Mir Sadek Jumman, Mahbub Hossain Bhuiyan, Nur Alam, Mamunur Rahman, Delwar Hossain Mintu, Mazharul Islam, Abu Sohel Mohammad Kibria, Zakir Hossain, Habibur Rahman Shawkat, Mostafa Allama Dada Bhai and Khawaza Faruq Ahmed.

They submitted their nomination papers at the office of Dhaka divisional commissioner while candidates for Munshiganj-1 seat submitted their nominations at the office of Munshiganj district commissioner. The divisional commissioner and district commissioner will act as returning officers for their respective constituencies.

Candidates for Munshiganj-1 seat are Mohammad Momin Ali (four-party alliance), Mahi B Chowdhury (BDB), Jahangir Alam, KM Hafizur Rahman and Shahjahan Khan.

The nomination papers are being scrutinised today, the press released added.

The ruling four-party alliance nominees submitted their nominations with a large number of leaders and workers, who brought out mammoth processions, both in Dhaka and Munshiganj.
