Biman grounded as pilots go on wildcat strike
Staff Correspondent
Pilots of Biman Bangladesh Airlines stayed off work yesterday to press their three-point demand, including removal of a deputy director, in a wildcat strike that prompted cancellation of the national flag carrier's eight international and domestic flights.Zia International Airport sources said the flights to Rome, Yangon, Kolkata and Kathmandu and domestic airports were cancelled, as agitating Bangladesh Airlines Pilots Association (Bapa) went on strike at 10:00am in line with Tuesday's decision on an indefinite strike. The implementation of an agreement with State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and removal of Deputy Director (Biman public relations) Zahurul Alam took centre stage in the charter of demands. Later in the day, Biman authorities sat with Bapa leaders and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh sent a press release last night, saying the issue was settled. But pilots did not call off the strike until yesterday evening.
