Apon Ahsan: Adman with an edge
Novera Deepita
Apon Ahsan, one of the most promising advertisement makers of the country, has recently directed a music video. The song Ekla pakhi (Lonely bird) by Wakar Chowdhury was given a new dimension in the video. 'So far I have received a good response from a select few who have watched the video,' says Apon.Among his most popular works, he cites the ad of RC Cola, which created a ripple with Nobel and Reshmi Ghosh dancing to the tune of a folk song by Babul Suprio of India. Then there is the Cosmos Biscuit ad with Farah Ruma, BD Foods with Moushumi and Faysal, and Berger Paints with Mila Hossain. Apon usually works with jingles because he believes in the idea: 'If you cannot express your message, a song does the magic.' Apon was an active member of Swanan, a recitation group in Rajshahi University in the 1990s. Here he met theatre personality Ramendu Majumdar who found that this young man had talent and asked him to work for him. He gave him the opportunity to display his talent in advertising. He started with client servicing and working with creative ideas. He had a knack for script writing and earned recognition in the field with the ad of Anchor Milk. The dialogue Ammu, tumi lakkhi (Mom, you are so sweet) instantly won the hearts of the spectators. From then on he never had to look back. In the advertising world, the making of a commercial involves teamwork. Apon says, 'The credit usually goes to the director.' So, the idea of making his own film cropped up. Apon is characteristically modest about his achievement. Referring to his RC Cola ad, he says, 'In my view, it was not a technically sound film. I think it clicked because of the music. The blend of urban and rural music did the trick.' In the long run, says Apon, he would like to work with better technical facilities.
